This stove top hot chocolate recipe cooks up quickly and method is simple. Ground chestnuts add warm and toasty flavor notes to this warming drink. The natural sweetness of chestnuts blends perfectly with the hot chocolate, elevating the classic drink into one of decadence.

You can use either chestnuts you have roasted yourself or vacuum packed pre-roasted chestnuts. Either work well in this recipe, however the homemade roasted chestnuts have a nuttier taste, and produce a much bolder hot cocoa. If you have unshelled roasted nuts, follow the steps in my Oven Roasted Chestnut Recipe to unpeel them, and dig out the meaty insides.

Oven roasting and peeling chestnuts is easy, as long as you follow some simple steps.

  • Soak the chestnuts before roasting them.
  • Check for “dud chestnuts” these rattle when shaken, indicating a shriveled nut inside.
  • Score the chestnut shells evenly and deeply.

HOT TIP!

If you don’t want to mash the chestnuts or maybe your serving hot chocolate for a crowd, substitute my chestnut orgeat syrup instead of whole chestnuts. The orgeat recipe makes a batch and can be added into the hot chocolate right before serving to achieve the same nutty taste and smooth creamy texture.

**Just Omit the sugar in the recipe below as it is already added to the Chestnut Orgeat!

Powdered cocoa, roasted chestnuts, and of course simmered hot milk make this variation on the classic warmed chocolate irresistibly comforting and creamy. Settle into this warming cup of chocolatey goodness and revel in the winter season.
