Air Fryer Apple Chip Recipe
A healthy, homemade air fryer apple chip recipe (with a delightful DIY cinnamon sugar seasoning…)
After a day spent in the orchard, I was excited to get home and bake all the apple things; apple pie, apple dumplings, etc. But our apple picking happened late in the afternoon on a Sunday and with school/work preparations for the upcoming week looming, I would need to forgo these extravagant recipe notions. I still wanted a cinnamon filled, apple fruit dessert fix, so I created these homemade quick air fryer apple chip recipe. With apples sliced thinly and seasoned decadently, these were a perfect after dinner sweet bites “snack” that disappeared by the handfuls! These apple crisps were also a perfect reminder of the day spent together in the hillside apple orchard, enjoying the outdoors and each others company while we filled our bags with fruit.

Apple Chips are healthy, and quick to prepare in the air fryer. I included some ideas for leftovers below, but I doubt you will have any. These cinnamon spiced snacks were quickly gobbled up!

A Thin Slice and Lots of Spice (and Patience!)….
I sliced the apples thin to ensure a quick cook time and made sure to add a kick of spicey ingredients to my cinnamon sugar coating mix. I actually tried 2 techniques for these apple chips during recipe testing. The successful method for me was using the air-fryer. For the other attempted method I used my dehydrator to make apple chips. The air-fryer worked quicker and the apple chips had more of a crisp to them. Drying the apple crisps in the dehydrator took way too long (16 hours) and I wanted to serve up something appley that night. However, if you do not have an air fryer, you can use the dehydrator method. See info on that in the FAQ below

This apple chip recipe is a perfect way to serve up orchard fresh apples to hungry mouths. And the list of ingredients is small, everything can be found in your kitchen already; all that’s missing is the freshly picked orchard apples.
The ingredients for these air fryer treats are simple and yet the combination creates a complex flavor profile.
- Cinnamon is a classic pairing with apples, and it’s perfectly mixed into the DIY seasoning blend used in this recipe.
- I use vanilla paste in this recipe instead of vanilla extract because it as not as liquid and has a stronger flavor when cooked in the air fryer.
- Some recipes call for coating the apple slices with lemon to deter browning. During the cooking in the air fryer the apples will become slightly browned, but doubling up on the citrus here will throw the recipe off, so use the lemon juice as instructed!
Local Apple Picking Near Me
I am lucky to live in the Hudson Valley, NY where farms and apple orchards are abundant. The local apples featured in this recipe are from Wightman fruit farm in Kerhonkson, NY. This orchard specializes in hard to find heirloom apple varieties, so an orchard visit is always a fun experience for the family! Macintoshes and Jonagold’s are great, but venturing into different apple varieties is truly an experience not to be missed. Check your local area for apple picking (if the climate allows) and make a sweet and memorable ending to this Fall pastime with this recipe for spiced apple chips.
